It is with great sadness that the ESR announces the passing of Dr. Gerard D. Hurley, former EAR President. Dr. Hurley was a highly respected radiologist and an influential leader in European radiology who dedicated his career to advancing medical imaging and strengthening professional collaboration across Europe.
Born in Leap, Co. Cork, Ireland, in 1940, Prof. Hurley trained in Ireland, Glasgow, and London before serving for many years as a consultant radiologist in Dublin. He held numerous leadership roles throughout his distinguished career, including Dean of the Faculty of Radiologists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and President of the UEMS Radiology Section and Board. As President of the European Association of Radiology from 2003 to 2004, he led important organisational reforms that helped shape the future of the society.
His many contributions to radiology were recognised internationally, including Honorary Membership of the Radiological Society of North America in 1997 and the ESR Gold Medal in 2014.
Dr. Hurley will be greatly missed by the European radiology community.
