ESR-ESTRO joint session sees packed room at ESTRO 2026

Vienna, Austria – May 21, 2026 – The European Society of Radiology is pleased to announce the incredible success of its joint session with the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) on May 16 at ESTRO 2026 in Stockholm, Sweden. The session, which focussed on the individualised treatment of primary rectal cancer, drew a full audience, highlighted the importance and investment in multidisciplinary collaboration to improve patient care.

Chaired by Rebecca Muirhead (UK), and Regina Beets-Tan (NL), the session saw three insightful talks and a panel discussion. Creating a balanced mix of approaches, speakers shared their personal experiences in developing treatment strategies, both from the perspective of radiation oncologists and surgical oncologists.

“We were absolutely delighted with the success of this session”, stated Regina Beets-Tan, Scientific Director of the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR) and former Chairperson of the ESR Board of Directors. “It truly reflects how critical imaging has become in multidisciplinary rectal cancer management. I look forward to continuing to work closely with our partners in radiation and surgical oncology to improve patient care of this disease.”

“The collaboration between ESR and ESTRO has proved to be invaluable in advancing multidisciplinary collaboration in cancer care, allowing us to combine expertise, education, and innovation to drive better outcomes for patients across Europe and beyond”, said Prof. Minerva Becker, Chairperson of the ESR Board of Directors. “We are very grateful to ESTRO for having invited us to participate in this session at their congress and look forward to future cooperation.”
