It is with great sadness that the ESR announces the passing of Dr. Gerard D. Hurley, former EAR President. Dr. Hurley was a highly respected radiologist and an influential leader in European radiology whose career was dedicated to advancing medical imaging, strengthening professional collaboration, and improving standards in radiology practice across Europe.
Born in Leap, Co. Cork, Ireland, in 1940, Gerard studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland from 1961 to 1967. He subsequently pursued specialist training in radiology in the United Kingdom, becoming registrar in radiology at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow in 1968 and receiving his Diploma in Medical Radiodiagnosis in London in 1969. He continued his postgraduate training as senior registrar in radiology at Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow, as well as at St. Thomas’ Hospital and the Brompton Hospital in London. In 1973, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists, followed in 1978 by Fellowship of the Faculty of Radiologists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Ad Eundem.
Dr. Hurley served as consultant radiologist at the City Hospital in Nottingham from 1974 to 1975 before returning to Ireland, where he spent the majority of his professional career working at the Federated Dublin Voluntary Hospitals, including the Richmond, Cappagh and Dr. Steevens’ Hospital, the Baggot Street Hospital, the Meath and Adelaide Hospitals, and the National Children’s Hospital in Tallaght. Over three decades of clinical practice, he became widely respected for his professionalism, leadership, and dedication to patient care.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Hurley made substantial contributions to radiology organisations both nationally and internationally. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Radiologists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland from 1992 to 1994 and was also a council member of the Irish Medical Organisation.
From 1995 to 2000, he served as President of the UEMS Radiology Section and Board, where he played a key role in promoting harmonisation and raising standards in specialist radiology practice throughout the European Union. His work helped strengthen cooperation between European radiology communities and contributed significantly to the development of radiology training and professional standards across Europe.
As President of the European Association of Radiology from 2003 to 2004, Dr. Hurley led an important period of organisational reform. During his presidency, he re-wrote the statutes to establish the EAR on a strong legal basis in Vienna, introduced new electoral rules for national and subspecialty societies that enabled open elections at the EAR General Assembly in 2005, and successfully maintained unity amongst member societies during a challenging period for the organisation. He also re-established the structure of the research committee, helping strengthen the scientific foundations of the association.
His distinguished career and contributions to radiology were recognised through numerous awards. In 1997, he received Honorary Membership of the Radiological Society of North America, and in 2014 he was awarded the ESR Gold Medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions to radiology and to the ESR.
Dr. Gerard D. Hurley leaves behind a lasting legacy within Irish and European radiology. He will be remembered as a dedicated physician, a thoughtful leader, and a tireless advocate for excellence and collaboration in radiology. He will be greatly missed by the European radiology community.
